The Athabasca Sand Dunes is a remote wilderness area that is accessible only by air, or by boat from Lake Athabasca communities. Independent visitors must be self-sufficient for wilderness travel taking along all food and supplies. All garbage must be packed out, and visitors have to be aware of special park regulations designed to protect the fragile environment. There are no visitor services or facilities of any kind in the park.

A chapter of Northern Sandscapes is devoted to giving you the information you need to plan a trip, whether independently or as part of a guided excursion.

Following are the key organizations which should be contacted before planning a trip:

  • Athabasca Eco Expeditions offers outfitting for independent trips as well as fully guided trips to the dunes and other wilderness areas around Lake Athabasca. They are based at Otherside River Lodge, 70 kilometres west of Stony Rapids. Visit the Athabasca Eco Expeditions web site or call them at 1-800-667-5490 (toll-free in North America).
  • Contact Tourism Saskatchewan for information on visiting the Athabasca Sand Dunes or other areas of the province. See Tourism Saskatchewan's web site, or call toll-free in North America at 1-877-237-2273.
  • Contact the Park Superintendent in Stony Rapids (telephone 306-439-2062) for park regulations and further information on Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Wilderness Park.
